Transcription: Hi, welcome to Self-Care for Educators. I am your host, Dr. Tina Boogren, and this is episode, oh my goodness, 12 of season six. I'm so glad you're here. So I have two invitations for you this week and I feel a tiny bit awkward calling them invitations because they're kind of requests. But I hope that they feel like an invitation. So the one that feels really awkward, I'm just gonna get it out of the way.

So Global Guru voting is open, and some of you know that  for the past two years, I have been recognized as one of the top 30 education gurus, and this designation means a lot to me. Gosh, it feels weird to say, but the work that I do is so incredibly important to me in terms of how I serve educators, and so to be recognized for it just feels really incredible. And so in order to secure the ranking of Global Guru, it's based on a number of things. So things like public opinion, originality of ideas, impact of original ideas, practicality of ideas, presentation style, number of publications and writings, and this thing called a guru factor.

Anyway, the public opinion piece is 30% of the ranking criteria, and voting is open now through December 20th, 2025  and the new rankings will be shared in January. And so just as a favor to me, it takes two seconds and you don't get inundated with a bunch of junk, I promise. If you go, we'll include the link obviously, but if you go to globalgurus.org/vote/education, then you should be able to see all of the 2025 gurus there. And if you could put a vote for me, that would just make me. mmm, so grateful and happy. So thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Okay. Now let me get onto the invitation that makes me way more comfortable to talk about, and that is if you are so inclined to pre-order the second edition of The Beginning Teacher’s Field Guide, that will be coming out in February. Oh my goodness. So I cannot tell you how excited I am to get this book in the hands of our beginning educators.

So, this is one of the first books that I wrote, and I'm so proud of this book. It's the book that I wish I would have had as a beginning educator. It's my favorite cover of all of my books. Every time I pick it up, I just, oh, feel warm and fuzzy. It's a book I'm incredibly proud of. And the book was written pre COVID. And so while everything in there is still true, it just like everything that took place before COVID, it feels a little bit off. And so Adrienne, Adrienne Turner, our Adrienne Turner of the Magic Making Podcast Adrienne Turner and I worked together to create this second edition. And it's something we're really proud of. This has been about two years in the making, and I just wanna kind of share with you what's different about this second edition that makes it so special.

So, first of all, it follows the same format as the first edition, which, if any of you have that book, what I did is I put one chapter to each of the six developmental phases that Ellen Moir identifies as the phases that new teachers go through and their attitudes towards teaching. So Anticipation. Survival, Disillusionment, Rejuvenation, Reflection, and then the Second Anticipation phase. So again, we followed that same format where we have a chapter for each of those. We also kept the essays at the beginning, so some of my essays are still there, but we've got new essays with Adrienne’s voice that, those essays share our experiences feeling all the things that we felt during those particular phases.

Then what we've done is we've greatly expanded the instructional strategies, but not in an overwhelming way. So one of the main things that I thought about when writing the first edition was how when we talk about any sort of instructional framework, oftentimes it's overwhelming for new teachers. And so one of the missions and visions that I had was to try to take a robust instructional framework and reduce it down to essential strategies that would be the most beneficial for new educators to get a handle on and matching those strategies with the phase to help reduce decision fatigue. So in other words, during the anticipation phase, we outlined specifically, boom, boom, boom, get really clear on these particular strategies. When you're in survival, get really clear on these particular strategies. And we've divided those strategies between classroom strategies, instructional strategies, and we've updated the self-care strategies to be more wellness strategies. And so there's been kind of an overhaul there, which feels really good.

The other piece that Adrienne really took the lead on that you are going to love is including in each chapter, tips for neurodivergent educators. This is something that we just have not come across in much of the literature currently, and we think it's a need like, gosh, like so many things, we think they're good tips for everyone, but it's a special, special nod to our neurodivergent educators. We've also included additional pieces of wisdom and advice from more veteran expert teachers talking directly to beginning teachers, which feels really personal.

This book is meant to be written in. It's meant to be a reflective guide. What we love is that it can be used in conjunction with Supporting Beginning Teachers or Coaching for Educator Wellness, or it can be used completely on its own. An individual new teacher can take this book and work through that on their own. A mentor or a coach or administrator can help new teachers work together through the book. There's so many uses for this, and I will say, as a side note, I've had so many people tell me that the book isn't really just for beginning teachers, that it's really a nice kind of focused view of instruction that all educators can benefit from. So I hope that that's true.

We're really, really proud of the book. We love the cover. The cover is a nod to the first edition, but it's blue to catch your eye with a big stamp that says Second Edition. And my favorite part, Adrienne Turner's name right next to mine. We hope that you love this book and here's something that's kind of a behind the curtain piece, in the publishing world, preorders matter. And so if you feel like this is a book that you know you're going to buy for yourself, for a new educator in your life, for all of the new educators, for those of you that are mentors and administrators and coaches in buildings, if you wanna go ahead and place that preorder now, it would mean the world to us.

We of course, will link to this, but you can preorder it now via Solution Tree, via Marzano Resources and by time this episode airs it should be available on Amazon as well. I always say compare the prices between Amazon and then Solution Tree/Marzano Resources. And please, please, please preorder, oh my gosh.

Right now, the publication date is February 27th, 2026. Sometimes that changes just because everything is, oh, between paper production and all the things, sometimes that changes, but it should be right around there. So you should get it in your hands at the end of February, early March.

Ah, so those are my invitations for this week. I would just be really, really grateful and honored. If you wouldn't mind, as I said, going over to globalgurus.org/vote/education and place a little vote for me. It would just mean a lot for me. It helps me continue to do this work for all of you. And an invitation to preorder The Beginning Teacher's Field Guide, Second Edition that is available for preorder now, and we'll be out at the end of February.

Uh, I'm so grateful for all of you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Adrienne, we did it. I'm so proud of us. Thank you to Solution Tree and Marzano Resources for supporting us so deeply in this work. And thank you to you, our listeners. We really, really hope that this serves as a really helpful companion in supporting our newest educators because we are cheering so hard for them. We love them. We can do this. Make it a great week.
